My amazing Dad

I love my dad, he is the most gentle caring man I have met. He always puts others before himself and would get out of bed in the middle of the night to go and help someone who has a broken down car.
It was lovely to paint him as it was just we spent some time together :)
Painted on arches medium 300 gm

Little flower Girl

Earlier this year a friend of mine was married, this little darling was her flower girl.
Watercolour painted on 400gm medium Arches
Such a beautiful paper to paint on, this is the first time I have tried this weight, and I
love it. The paper is heavy enough to absorb the water without buckling.
I really tried to layer the glazes very gently to achieve a soft skin tone.
All a learning curve, and still lots more to learn which is the enjoyable part.

The stages of a portrait

Painting in watercolour is a challenge compared to oil or pastel. With watercolour you work from light to dark, trying to keep those whites as it is almost impossible to bring them back after they have been painted over...grrrrr, lol....
This is Sally,  a friend of mine who was married earlier this year. Here she is,a gorgeous vintage loving girl looking really beautiful on her wedding day.
My portraits start off very light with glazes of colour with transparent colours. I gradually build up these colours after each layer is totally dry. A beautiful method that gives such a glow to your painting.

Sally is still unfinished. There is so much to learn with these watercolours
And I am  on a mission to conquer the difficulties along the way... Many mistakes
Are the only way to learn.. I think self taught artists are unique in that they develop
A technique that sort of evolves from all the mistakes, lol....
Not to mention the wonderful therapy from just sitting and painting :)

Painting eyes

Eyes are such a focal point when looking at a portrait.
Painting eyes require looking deeper into the soul of a person
to capture who they really are. The eyes are the window to the soul.
I love painting eyes, it is my favourite part of the portrait.
A great study is to paint eyes.
Here I have painted two eyes, one with a flat skin tone mixed on the palette,
And the other with the use of colours which are layer down and mixed on the paper.
Much more alive and colourful than the flat skin tones.

My Gorgeous Galaxy Girl

My daughter, painted from a photo taken at my wedding earlier this year. She is adorable and quirky, full of life and very unique. She found some galaxy print cotton, which is quirky too :)  and we made a vintage inspired dress for her to wear. I love my Jassy and really loved painting her pretty face.

Watercolour, painted on arches 300 gm cold pressed paper. I used transparent paints and did lots of glazes to build the colour in the skin tones.
